AMC Gremlin Whiskey Glass
Raise a glass to the compact car that refused to blend in. AMC introduced the Gremlin on April 1, 1970, presenting its distinctive kammback-like design as an American answer to a new economy-car landscape. From the Hornet connection to the Gremlin X, V8 option, and eventual handoff to the AMC Spirit, its history offers plenty to talk about. A fitting barware choice for AMC fans and classic-car collectors.
The AMC Gremlin, also known as the American Motors Gremlin, was American Motors Corporation's subcompact economy car for the 1970 through 1978 model years. Introduced on April 1, 1970, it used a shortened AMC Hornet platform and a distinctive kammback-like rear body design. AMC marketed it as "the first American-built import" while competing with new domestic subcompacts such as the Chevrolet Vega and Ford Pinto, plus imports including the Volkswagen Beetle and Toyota Corolla. Design chief Dick Teague and stylist Bob Nixon developed the idea from AMC's small-car experience; Nixon completed the first formal sketches in 1967. The Gremlin was built in a single two-door body style and totaled 671,475 units in one generation. Its U.S. run ended after 1978, when the restyled AMC Spirit succeeded it for 1979 and continued through 1983. AMC's Canadian Brampton, Ontario plant built Gremlins during the 1970s. In Mexico, AMC subsidiary Vehículos Automotores Mexicanos began Gremlin production in 1974 and used the name through 1983 on its version of the AMC Spirit sedan.
