From its remnants, Jim Kimsey founded Quantum Computer Services in 1985. Its Quantum Link service went online that November, using software licensed from PlayNet; services for Apple and IBM-compatible computers followed in 1988. After separating from Apple, Quantum renamed the service America Online in October 1989. AOL became a leading online service, reaching about three million active users by 1995 and more than 20 million internet-service consumers by 2000. It acquired Netscape in 1998 and MapQuest in 1999, then merged with Time Warner in 2001. Spun off in 2009, AOL shifted toward media and advertising. Verizon acquired it in 2015 and combined it with Yahoo as Oath in 2016, later Verizon Media. Apollo acquired that business in 2021, and Bending Spoons acquired AOL in January 2026. AOL is based in New York City.
