AOL Instant Messenger, commonly known as AIM and sometimes styled as aim, was AOL's instant messaging and presence-information program. It launched in May 1997 as a stand-alone download for Microsoft Windows and operated until December 15, 2017. AIM grew from the original platform's “online messages,” written in PL/1 on a Stratus computer by Dave Brown. Using AOL's proprietary OSCAR protocol, with TOC available for simpler clients, it enabled real-time communication through screen names, buddy lists, status information, and away messages. AIM became especially popular in the late 1990s and early 2000s, with teens and college students using away messages to share updates, locations, jokes, and plans. Its market position later declined as SMS, Google Talk, social-network messaging, iMessage, and WhatsApp expanded. AOL acquired ICQ in 1998 and competed with services including Yahoo! Messenger and MSN Messenger. Verizon Communications acquired AOL in June 2015, then combined AOL and Yahoo into Oath Inc. in June 2017; that business is now called Yahoo. AOL discontinued AIM later that year.
