Ask Jeeves was founded in 1996 in Berkeley, California, by Garrett Gruener and David Warthen. Designed to accept questions in everyday natural language alongside traditional keyword searching, it launched in beta in mid-April 1997 and fully on June 1, 1997. Gary Chevsky designed and implemented the original software, while Warthen, Chevsky, and Justin Grant led the graphical interface and initial AskJeeves.com launch. The service became a prominent late-1990s and early-2000s web search name, identified with Jeeves, the valet character inspired by P. G. Wodehouse. Ask Jeeves acquired Teoma on September 18, 2001, and IAC acquired Ask Jeeves in July 2005. In February 2006, the company dropped the Jeeves name and became Ask.com. It ended in-house crawler development in 2010 and shifted toward question-and-answer services and outside search providers. Ask.com later emphasized articles, trending topics, entertainment, and news aggregation. The site shut down on May 1, 2026.
