Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Vanity License Plate
Give a vehicle, garage, rail room, or workshop a Santa Fe-inspired finishing touch. This vanity license plate celebrates the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, chartered in 1859 and built into a far-reaching railroad serving the West and Southwest. Its history spans Kansas beginnings, the Chicago-Los Angeles mainline, celebrated passenger service, freight operations, and the eventual move into BNSF. A display piece for fans of AT&SF heritage and classic railroad travel.
The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, commonly called the Santa Fe or AT&SF, was chartered in February 1859 to serve Atchison and Topeka, Kansas, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Its first general office building opened in Topeka in 1869. The line reached the Kansas-Colorado border in 1873 and Pueblo in 1876; a branch from Lamy reached Santa Fe in 1880 after the main route bypassed the city because of mountainous terrain. Through acquisitions and construction, the system reached Chicago in 1887 and completed a Chicago-Los Angeles mainline that year. The railroad expanded across much of the West and Southwest, including California, Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico. Known for freight, intermodal work, and notable passenger trains, it ended independent operations after merging with Burlington Northern on December 31, 1996. The combined railroad became the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway, later known as BNSF.
