Blockbuster Video began when David Cook opened its first store in Dallas, Texas, on October 19, 1985, stocking 8,000 VHS and 2,000 Beta tapes. Cook had previously founded Cook Data Services in 1978 and moved into video rental after leaving a Dallas Video Works franchise. The blue-and-yellow store grew through franchising and rapid expansion under investor Wayne Huizenga, who acquired stores and rivals including Major Video. Blockbuster bought Erol's in 1990, added Sound Warehouse and Music Plus in 1992, and acquired Super Club Retail Entertainment in 1993. Viacom acquired Blockbuster for $8.4 billion in 1994. The retail brand was renamed Blockbuster in 1996, when headquarters moved from Fort Lauderdale to Dallas. Blockbuster later added DVD-by-mail, online rental, video-on-demand and game offerings, reaching 9,094 stores and 84,300 employees worldwide in 2004. Competition from Netflix, Redbox and video on demand contributed to its decline. Blockbuster filed for Chapter 11 protection in 2010; Dish Network acquired its remaining stores in 2011. Corporate-owned U.S. stores closed by 2014, while a franchised Bend, Oregon, store remains open.
