Business Express Airlines began as Atlantic Air in 1982 and adopted the Business Express name in 1985 to better appeal to its business commuter clientele. Often called Business Express, BizEX, or BEX, the regional airline expanded through acquisitions. It bought Pilgrim Airlines of Groton/New London in February 1986, gaining an airline that had previously acquired NewAir of New Haven and opening New York and Washington, D.C. markets. In September 1989, Business Express acquired Albany-based Mall Airways and its Canadian routes to Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa, and it acquired Brockway Air turboprop equipment later that year. The carrier became an early Delta Connection partner, later added a Northwest Airlink affiliation, and joined American Airlines first as American Connection in 1997 and later within American Eagle. AMR Eagle Holding announced its purchase of the airline in December 1998. On December 1, 2000, Business Express ceased independent operations as its flying transferred to American Eagle.
