Compaq Computer Corporation was founded on February 16, 1982, in Harris County, Texas, by former Texas Instruments managers Rod Canion, Jim Harris, and Bill Murto. Initially called Gateway Technology, it introduced the Compaq Portable in November 1982 and released it in March 1983. The portable IBM PC-compatible system became a commercial success and established Compaq's reputation for compatibility. The company expanded with the Deskpro desktop in 1984, the Deskpro 386 in 1986, and the SystemPro server in 1989. Under Eckhard Pfeiffer, who became president and CEO in 1991, Compaq entered the retail market with Presario computers and became the top PC manufacturer in 1994. It acquired Tandem Computers in 1997 and Digital Equipment Corporation in 1998. Hewlett-Packard acquired Compaq for $25 billion in 2002. HP subsequently used the name on HP Compaq business computers; the Compaq brand was discontinued for lower-end systems in 2013.
