Conrail, formally the Consolidated Rail Corporation, was created by the federal government to take over potentially profitable rail lines from bankrupt Northeastern carriers. Incorporated in Pennsylvania on October 25, 1974, it began operations on April 1, 1976. Its system included lines from Penn Central, Erie Lackawanna, Lehigh Valley, Reading, Central Railroad of New Jersey, Lehigh and Hudson River, and other designated operations. Penn Central itself had resulted from the 1968 merger of the Pennsylvania Railroad and New York Central Railroad, followed by a 1969 merger with the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. After regulatory changes and managerial improvements, Conrail began turning a profit in 1981 and was privatized in 1987. CSX and Norfolk Southern agreed in 1997 to acquire and divide most of the network. They took control in August 1998 and began operating their portions on June 1, 1999. Conrail remains jointly owned, providing network, switching, terminal, and asset-management services in Shared Assets Areas in New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Detroit.
