Continental Airlines began as Varney Speed Lines in 1934, flying airmail and passengers from El Paso through New Mexico to Pueblo, Colorado. Robert F. Six became general manager in 1936, and the carrier was renamed Continental Air Lines in 1937 as its headquarters moved to Denver. After World War II, it expanded with aircraft including the DC-3 and Convair 240, then merged with Pioneer Air Lines in 1955, adding cities in Texas and New Mexico. Continental introduced Chicago-Denver-Los Angeles service in 1957 and entered the jet age with Boeing 707 flights in 1959. Its 1968 orange-and-gold Golden Tail identity gave way to the blue-and-gray globe logo after 1987. Texas International merged into Continental in 1982, and headquarters moved to Houston in 1983. Continental later absorbed PeopleExpress, Frontier, New York Air, and commuter carriers in 1987. A 2010 merger agreement joined Continental and United; the combined operation retained the United name, Continental operating certificate, and globe livery. Integration was completed March 3, 2012.
