Delia's, Inc., stylized as dELiA*s, launched in 1993 through two Yale University graduates as an apparel and accessories lifestyle brand aimed primarily at girls and young women. It built its business through direct-mail catalogs, websites, and mall-based specialty stores, while emphasizing an understanding of Generation Y and using the internet to develop its identity. In December 1997, Delia's acquired Gurl.com; the site began offering Delia's catalog merchandise in May 1998. The company formed iTurf in 1999 as a teen-centered online subsidiary that included Gurl.com and related web properties. Alloy Inc. acquired Delia's in 2003 for $50 million, then spun it off in 2005. HRSH Acquisitions bought Alloy Inc., marketed as Alloy Apparel, in January 2013. Delia's filed for Chapter 11 protection in New York in December 2014 and planned to liquidate 95 stores. Steve Russo of Fab/Starpoint acquired the brand in 2015 and reopened it online, though that effort was unsuccessful. Dolls Kill later licensed the name and relaunched Delia's as a sub-brand in November 2018.
