E. F. Hutton & Co. was founded in San Francisco in 1904 by Edward Francis Hutton and his brother, Franklyn Laws Hutton. An early California brokerage, it lost its offices in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and later built a nationwide retail network for debt and equity securities. Wall Street trader Gerald M. Loeb joined in 1924 and ultimately became chairman, while Edward F. Hutton led the firm until his death in 1962. The company maintained seasonal offices in Palm Beach, Florida, and Saratoga Springs, New York, and opened its first one-man Maui office in December 1969. Robert M. Fomon became chief executive officer in 1970. After a 1987 crisis, Hutton agreed to merge with Shearson Lehman/American Express; the combination took effect in 1988 as Shearson Lehman Hutton. The Hutton name was retired in 1990. Subsequent transactions placed portions of the original business within Smith Barney, Citigroup, and later Morgan Stanley Wealth Management. The EF Hutton name was revived again in 2021 by EF Hutton Group, the rebranded Kingswood Capital Markets.
