Indian Motorcycle began as the Hendee Manufacturing Company, founded by George M. Hendee in 1897 to make bicycles. Oscar Hedstrom joined in 1900, and their first Indian prototype was completed in Middletown, Connecticut, on May 25, 1901; public sales followed in 1902. Production centered in Springfield, Massachusetts, where the original company operated until 1953, adopting the Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing Company name in 1923. Indian became the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer during the 1910s and took the first three places at the 1911 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy. The Scout, introduced in 1920, and Chief, introduced in 1922, became defining models. Indian merged with Du Pont Motors in 1930, then entered bankruptcy in 1953. The name later passed through several owners and revival efforts, including Gilroy, California, and Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Polaris acquired the brand in 2011 and moved operations to Minnesota and Iowa. In 2026, a majority-stake transaction placed the brand under Carolwood LP.
