Indian Motorcycle traces its origins to the Hendee Manufacturing Company, founded by George M. Hendee in 1897 to make bicycles. Oscar Hedstrom joined in 1900, and their first Indian prototype was completed in Middletown, Connecticut, on May 25, 1901; public sales began in 1902 from Springfield, Massachusetts. Hendee Manufacturing adopted the Indian Motorcycle Company name in 1923. During the 1910s it became the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer, and Indian riders swept the first three positions at the 1911 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy. The Scout, introduced in 1920, and Chief, introduced in 1922, became defining models. Indian merged with Du Pont Motors in 1930 and bought Ace Motor Corporation in 1927. Manufacturing ended in 1953 after bankruptcy, but the name continued through several owners, import programs, and revival attempts. Polaris acquired the brand in 2011, moved operations to Minnesota and Iowa, and launched newly designed Indian motorcycles in 2013. Polaris completed a sale of a majority stake to Los Angeles-based Carolwood LP in February 2026.
