A Kelly-Moore Paints kids tee brings a little paint-store history into the next generation. Founded in California in 1946, Kelly-Moore became a recognizable independent name for people tackling rooms, homes, and big ideas. Its journey included company stores, western growth, employee ownership, and a later move to Texas. Kelly-Moore Paints was founded in 1946 in San Carlos, California, by former paint-industry employees William Kelly and William Moore. Moore bought out Kelly in 1952 and remained closely involved for the next three decades, helping shape production methods and company-owned store planning. By 1984, as Moore retired, the business reported $136 million in revenue and nearly $11 million in profit. Joseph P. Cristiano became chief executive in January 1985. Expansion followed through acquisitions: Preservative Paint Co. of Seattle in 1994 added locations in Alaska and Washington, while K-M Universal in 1995 added an Arizona factory and outlets in Arizona and California. In 1998, an employee stock ownership plan was established. The company later joined the Paints America alliance and acquired Ponderosa Paint Manufacturing in 2000. Manufacturing moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to Hurst, Texas, in 2017, and headquarters moved to Irving, Texas, in 2023. After a 2022 acquisition by Flacks Group, the company announced store closures and an end to operations in January 2024. Its intellectual property assets were acquired by Latex Paint S.A. de C.V. in May 2024.
