This Khalifa Airways T-Shirt honors an ambitious Algiers-based airline from Algeria’s late-1990s aviation scene. Founded in 1999, the carrier built a network across Algerian cities while also serving destinations in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East before ceasing operations in 2003. Khalifa Airways was an Algerian passenger and cargo airline based in Algiers. Founded by Rafik Khalifa in June 1999, it received government authorisation to launch services in August 1999 and began operations that same month. Its network linked destinations within Algeria with international services in Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Late in 1999, the airline leased a Boeing 737-400 from Pegasus Airlines. In 2001, Khalifa Airways placed orders for three Airbus A340-300 aircraft, five A330-200 aircraft and ten A320 aircraft, with deliveries scheduled for 2004. The carrier also sponsored Olympique de Marseille from 2001 to 2003. Its operating life ended in 2003: a French court liquidated the airline on 10 July after it failed to make a 5 million euro payment to creditors. The company is remembered as a short-lived airline from Algeria’s expanding late-1990s aviation scene, with a route network spanning domestic Algerian cities and selected European destinations.
