Kidder, Peabody & Co. was an American securities firm established in Massachusetts in April 1865 by Henry P. Kidder, Francis H. Peabody, and Oliver W. Peabody. It was formed through the reorganization of J.E. Thayer & Brother, where its founders had worked as clerks. The firm operated across commercial, investment, and merchant banking, with securities activity in treasury, municipal, and corporate bonds as well as stocks. After the 1929 market crash, Albert H. Gordon bought the struggling firm in 1931 with financial backing from Stone & Webster and rebuilt it around utility finance and municipal bonds. Kidder Peabody later developed a financial research and development department in the late 1970s. General Electric acquired the firm in 1986 for its financial services division. In October 1994, GE agreed to sell most assets to PaineWebber; the transaction closed in January 1995, when the Kidder Peabody name was retired. PaineWebber was acquired by UBS AG in November 2000.
