Minolta began in Osaka, Japan, in 1928, when Kazuo Tashima established Nichi-Doku Shashinki Shoten, a Japanese-German camera shop. Its first product, the Nifcarette bellows camera, arrived in March 1929. The Minolta camera name was adopted in 1931, while the company operated as Chiyoda Kogaku Seiko between 1937 and 1962 before taking Minolta as its final company name. Its photographic history included the Minolta-35 rangefinder in 1947, the SR-2 SLR in 1958, and a 1972 cooperation agreement with Leitz that produced the Leica CL/Minolta CL and informed later Leica R models. In 1981 Saul Bass designed the Rising Sun logo. The 1985 Alpha, Maxxum, and Dynax 7000 system became the first commercially successful autofocus SLR line. Minolta merged with Konica in 2003 to form Konica Minolta. In 2006, Konica Minolta ended camera production and transferred DSLR camera assets to Sony, whose Alpha A100 followed that year.
