Its searchable, centralized index and user-friendly interface made hard-to-find recordings accessible, while its rapid growth helped make digital music sharing a defining issue of the early internet era. Copyright litigation brought the original network to a halt in July 2001, and the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June 2002. Roxio bought Napster's brand and logos for $5.3 million in November 2002, then launched a subscription-based Napster service in October 2003. Best Buy acquired Napster in September 2008, before selling it to Rhapsody in December 2011. Rhapsody adopted the Napster name in 2016. Later owners included MelodyVR, Hivemind and Algorand, and Infinite Reality, which acquired Napster in March 2025. In January 2026, the streaming service was shut down and relaunched as an artificial intelligence tool.
