Netscape Communications Corporation began as Mosaic Communications Corporation on April 4, 1994, founded by Jim Clark and Marc Andreessen with Kleiner Perkins as investors. Headquartered first in Mountain View, California, and later in Dulles, Virginia, it released Mosaic Netscape 0.9 on October 13, 1994. The browser was renamed Netscape Navigator, and the company adopted the Netscape name on November 14, 1994. Netscape's August 9, 1995 IPO became a defining internet-era event. Navigator was a leading browser during the first browser war, while the company also built server, e-commerce, and portal products. Netscape released browser source code and began the Mozilla project in 1998; later Mozilla work used the Gecko engine and led to the independent Mozilla Foundation in 2003. AOL announced its acquisition of Netscape in November 1998, completing the stock-swap deal on March 17, 1999. The brand continued through later browsers, including Netscape Navigator 9 in 2007, before browser support ended in 2008.
