Northern Pacific Railway, reporting mark NP, was a transcontinental railroad operating from Minnesota to the Pacific Northwest between 1864 and 1970. Congress chartered the company on July 2, 1864, to connect the Great Lakes with Puget Sound. Groundbreaking followed at Carlton, Minnesota, on February 15, 1870. The route reached Fargo in 1872 and the upper Missouri River in 1873; Tacoma was selected as the western terminus that July. After financial reverses and reorganizations, construction resumed and the main line was completed in Montana Territory on September 8, 1883, when Ulysses S. Grant drove the ceremonial last spike. Headquartered first in Brainerd and later in Saint Paul, Minnesota, NP served Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin. Its North Coast Limited became the railroad's flagship passenger train. Northern Pacific merged with other lines in 1970 to form Burlington Northern Railroad. Burlington Northern later merged with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in 1996, creating BNSF Railway.
