Northern Pacific Railway Vanity License Plate
Give your ride a destination in railroad history with a Northern Pacific Railway vanity license plate. The NP name recalls a congressionally chartered 1864 line that reached from Great Lakes country to Puget Sound, completed with the 1883 Last Spike in Montana Territory. It is a standout display piece for garages, train rooms, workshops, offices, and collectors who follow the Northern Pacific connection to Burlington Northern and BNSF.
Northern Pacific Railway, reporting mark NP, was chartered by the U.S. Congress on July 2, 1864, to link the Great Lakes with Puget Sound. Groundbreaking began at Carlton, Minnesota, on February 15, 1870. Construction moved west through Minnesota and Dakota Territory while another section advanced from Kalama, Washington Territory. The line reached Fargo in 1872 and the upper Missouri River at Edwinton, later Bismarck, in 1873. After financial crises and reorganizations, the transcontinental main line was completed in Montana Territory on September 8, 1883, when former President Ulysses S. Grant drove the ceremonial Last Spike. Headquartered first in Brainerd and later Saint Paul, Minnesota, the railway served the northern West with freight, passengers, and land sales. Its flagship was the North Coast Limited. Northern Pacific operated until 1970, when it merged with other lines to form Burlington Northern Railroad. Burlington Northern merged with Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe in 1996 to become BNSF Railway.
