Northwestern Bell Metal Bottle Opener
Open a favorite bottle with a nod to the regional telephone company that connected the upper Midwest for generations. This Northwestern Bell Metal Bottle Opener celebrates a name associated with Omaha, early telephone exchanges, Fargo dial service, and the later US West transition. It is a compact conversation starter for Bell System collectors, telecom workers, regional-history fans, and anyone who remembers familiar utility names from home.
Northwestern Bell Telephone Company served Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Nebraska in the upper Midwest. Its early regional telephone history includes a two-phone intercom used in Little Falls, Minnesota, in 1876; a Bell-licensed exchange believed to have opened in Deadwood, South Dakota, in 1878; and a Western Union exchange opened in Keokuk, Iowa, on September 1, 1878. That Keokuk exchange passed to the Bell Company after Western Union left the telephone business in November 1879. In Minneapolis, an experimental exchange opened at City Hall in fall 1878, preceding the incorporation of the Northwestern Telephone Exchange Company on December 10, 1878. The Iowa Telephone Company adopted the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company name on December 10, 1920. In January 1921, it merged with the Nebraska Telephone Company and Northwestern Telephone Exchange Company, retaining Omaha headquarters. Northwestern Bell established dial service in Fargo in 1939. Following the Bell System breakup, it did business as US West from 1984, later joining Mountain Bell and Pacific Northwest Bell. The Northwestern Bell operation was phased away by late summer 1999; US West was replaced by Qwest in 2000 and later by CenturyLink Communications.
