Keep everyday reminders close with a note pad inspired by Pamida, the familiar department store name that served small towns across the Midwest and West Central states. From its 1963 Knoxville, Iowa opening to generations of community shopping, Pamida became part of the local routine. A practical desk companion for collectors, office notes, grocery lists, and anyone who remembers the stores later rebranded as Shopko Hometown.
Pamida was a department store chain serving more than 175 locations across 16 Midwestern and West Central states. Its roots reached to Jim Witherspoon's 1938 rack jobber business, which became known as NuWay Drug Service in 1948. After Witherspoon acquired a distribution business in 1962, Lee Wegener joined the company and Pamida Inc. was established as a holding company. Witherspoon and Wegener opened the first discount retail outlet in Knoxville, Iowa, in 1963, followed soon by a store in Oskaloosa. The business expanded through the Midwest, largely as Gibson's Discount Center franchises, and became a public company in 1969. Pamida later operated 74 Gibson's stores before shifting toward larger stores and the Pamida name in the late 1970s. Shopko purchased Pamida in 1999. The companies merged in 2012, when most Pamida stores were rebranded as Shopko Hometown; that chain closed in 2019 during Shopko's bankruptcy and liquidation.
