Salomon Brothers was founded in 1910 by Arthur, Herbert, and Percy Salomon with clerk Ben Levy. Headquartered in New York City, the firm remained a partnership until the early 1980s. William Salomon became managing partner and head of the company in 1963, followed by John Gutfreund in 1978. Recognized as a bulge bracket firm in 1975, Salomon gained major visibility in 1979 when it shared top billing with Merrill Lynch on IBM's $1 billion debt issue. In 1981, commodity trading firm Phibro Corporation acquired the business in a reverse merger, creating Salomon Inc. and taking the firm public. During the 1980s, it became known for bond-market innovation, mortgage-backed securities, fixed-income trading, derivatives, and securitization. Travelers Group acquired Salomon for $9 billion in 1997. After Travelers merged with Citicorp in 1998, the combined investment banking operations became Salomon Smith Barney. The division was renamed Citigroup Global Markets Inc. on April 7, 2003.
