Spirit Airlines began in 1964 as Clippert Trucking Company, renamed Ground Air Transfer, Inc. in 1974. In 1983, Ned Homfeld founded Charter One Airlines in Macomb County, Michigan, as a Detroit-based charter tour operator serving destinations including Atlantic City, Las Vegas, and the Bahamas. The company introduced DC-9 and MD-80 jets in May 1992, adopted the Spirit Airlines name, and began scheduled Detroit-Atlantic City service on June 1, 1992. Its headquarters moved from Metro Detroit to Miramar, Florida, in 1999, and later to Dania Beach. Under Ben Baldanza, who became CEO after Indigo Partners invested in 2006, Spirit embraced the ultra-low-cost model: low base fares with optional-service fees. The carrier expanded across the United States, Caribbean, and Latin America. A proposed Frontier acquisition in 2022 gave way to JetBlue's successful bid, but a federal judge blocked that transaction in January 2024. After two Chapter 11 filings, Spirit ceased flight operations on May 2, 2026.
