Celebrate the Virginian Railway’s remarkable legacy with an ornament that honors a railroad built with purpose. VGN joined the coalfields of southern West Virginia to Hampton Roads, completed its route in 1909, and became celebrated for electric operations through the mountains between Mullens and Roanoke. The Virginian Railway, reporting mark VGN, was a Class I railroad created to move high-quality “smokeless” bituminous coal from southern West Virginia to Hampton Roads. Civil engineer and coal manager William Nelson Page and financier Henry Huttleston Rogers developed its predecessor lines: the Deepwater Railway, formed in West Virginia in 1898, and Virginia’s Tidewater Railway, formed in 1904. Their projects were combined as the Virginian Railway Company on March 8, 1907, with Page as its first president on April 15. The route joined the coalfields to a new pier at Sewell’s Point near Norfolk, Virginia. Its last spike was driven near Glen Lyn on January 29, 1909, and the completed line was celebrated in Norfolk that April. Known as the “Richest Little Railroad in the World,” VGN used steam, electric, and diesel power; a 134-mile electrified mountain section between Mullens, West Virginia, and Roanoke, Virginia, was completed in 1925. VGN merged into the Norfolk and Western Railway in 1959. Major portions of its route later remained in use under Norfolk Southern Railway.
