Westinghouse Electric Corporation began in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on January 8, 1886, when George Westinghouse founded the business that became Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company. It developed alternating-current infrastructure and operated major factories in East Pittsburgh and Lester, Pennsylvania, and Hamilton, Ontario, producing turbines, generators, motors and switchgear. The company demonstrated AC lighting at Great Barrington, Massachusetts, in 1886, supplied equipment for Niagara Falls power development in the 1890s, and put its first commercial steam turbine generator into service at Hartford Electric Light Co. in 1901. Renamed Westinghouse Electric Corporation in 1945, it expanded across appliances, broadcasting, transportation, power generation and nuclear technology. Its appliance business became White-Westinghouse after a 1975 sale. In the 1990s it shifted toward broadcasting, acquired CBS in 1995, and became CBS Corporation in 1997. The nuclear business was sold to BNFL in 1999 and re-formed as Westinghouse Electric Company.
