Abraham & Straus Youth Hoodie / Sweatshirt
Celebrate a lost New York department-store classic with this Abraham & Straus youth hoodie. Known as A&S, the company traced its beginning to Wechsler & Abraham on Brooklyn’s Fulton Street in 1865. It became Abraham & Straus in 1893, expanded across the region, and closed under its historic name in 1995 as most stores became Macy’s. This is a meaningful layer for young Brooklyn history fans and families with A&S memories.
Abraham & Straus, commonly known as A&S, was a major New York City department store based in Brooklyn. It began in 1865 at 285 Fulton Street as Wechsler & Abraham, founded by Joseph Wechsler and Abraham Abraham. In 1893, Nathan Straus, Isidor Straus, and Simon F. Rothschild bought Wechsler's interest, and the business was renamed Abraham & Straus. The company acquired the Wheeler Building at 422 Fulton Street in 1883 for its flagship, later expanding the store in a major 1928 to 1930 project. A&S joined Filene's and Lazarus in forming Federated Department Stores in 1929. It expanded across the New York metropolitan area after World War II, including branches in Hempstead, Paramus, White Plains, and Long Island. Federated merged with Allied Stores in 1992, consolidating A&S with Jordan Marsh. After Federated acquired R.H. Macy & Company in 1994, A&S was combined with Macy's. The Abraham & Straus name was retired in 1995; most locations became Macy's, while others became Stern's, Bloomingdale's, or Sears.
