Air Afrique was established as a transnational carrier for francophone West and Central Africa, with headquarters in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Conceived in February 1960 as a joint Air France and Union Aéromaritime de Transport venture, it was founded under the Treaty of Yaoundé on 28 March 1961 by 11 newly independent states. Operations began on 1 August 1961 with leased DC-4s, followed by long-haul service in October and Boeing 707 jet operations in January 1962. UAT merged with Transports Aériens Intercontinentaux in 1963 to form UTA, prompting an ownership reorganisation. Air Afrique later operated aircraft including DC-8s, Caravelles, DC-10s, Airbus A300s and A310s, linking African cities with Europe and New York. Financial difficulties deepened from the 1980s. Air France acquired UTA's stake in 1990 and became the major shareholder in 2001. Air Afrique ceased operations in January 2002, was declared bankrupt on 7 February 2002, and most of its routes were taken over by Air France. Afrinat International Airlines was its short-lived successor.
