AirTran Airways was a United States low-cost airline headquartered in Orlando, Florida. It began in 1993 as Conquest Sun Airlines, a Boeing 737-200 startup serving Orlando, formed by the management of Destination Sun Airways and Conquest Airlines. AirTran Corporation purchased the carrier in 1994 and renamed it AirTran Airways; it later became part of the independent Airways Corporation holding company. In 1997, ValuJet's holding company acquired Airways Corporation, adopted the AirTran Holdings name, and renamed ValuJet Airlines AirTran Airlines. The operations were combined into AirTran Airways in 1998, with AirTran Airlines legally merged into it in 1999. Atlanta remained the combined carrier's principal hub. AirTran grew with Boeing 717-200s and Boeing 737-700s, becoming the largest 717 operator. Southwest Airlines acquired AirTran and AirTran Holdings on May 2, 2011. Its 737-700s entered Southwest service, while its 717s were leased to Delta Air Lines. AirTran's final revenue flight operated December 28, 2014, from Atlanta to Tampa.
