AOL Media LLC, originally America Online, traces its roots to Control Video Corporation, founded in 1983. Its GameLine service brought downloadable 2600 games to subscribers by modem. From the company’s remnants, Jim Kimsey founded Quantum Computer Services in May 1985. Quantum Link launched for Commodore computers that year, followed by PC Link in 1988. After parting with Apple, Quantum renamed its service America Online in October 1989. AOL grew past CompuServe and Prodigy, reaching about three million active users by 1995 and more than 20 million consumers by 2000. Its history includes purchases of Netscape in 1998 and MapQuest in 1999. AOL merged with Time Warner in January 2001, then was spun off as an independent company in 2009. Verizon acquired AOL in 2015 and combined it with Yahoo under Oath, later Verizon Media. Apollo acquired Verizon Media in 2021, and Bending Spoons acquired AOL in January 2026.
