Amoco Ceramic Coaster
Set down a drink beside a piece of fuel-brand history with an Amoco Ceramic Coaster. Amoco grew from Indiana Standard’s Whiting Refinery heritage, absorbed American Oil into its identity, and became known nationwide through the memorable torch-and-oval era. That progression gives this coaster a collector-minded connection to classic signs, maps, service stations, and Chicago corporate history. It is an easy accent for a desk, den, garage, kitchen, home bar, or gift set for someone who appreciates American roadside nostalgia.
Amoco began with Standard Oil Company of Indiana, formed in 1889 by John D. Rockefeller around the Whiting Refinery on Lake Michigan in Whiting, Indiana. Independent after the 1911 Standard Oil trust breakup, Indiana Standard opened its first service station in Minneapolis in 1912 and held rights to the Standard name across much of the Midwest. It absorbed the Baltimore-founded American Oil Company in 1925, bringing the American and Amoco names into its retail identity. The familiar torch-and-oval image joined Standard and Amoco branding in 1946. American Oil's lead-free premium gasoline, later Amoco Super-Premium, preceded the nationwide phaseout of leaded fuel by decades. Pan-Am stations in the Southeast were rebranded Amoco in 1956, and by 1971 the company’s divisions used the Amoco name. Standard Oil Company of Indiana officially became Amoco Corporation in 1985. Headquartered in Chicago's Amoco Building, the company merged with BP in December 1998 as BP Amoco; the company name became BP in 2001. BP announced a selected-market Amoco station return in 2017.
