Arthur Andersen LLP was an American accounting firm based in Chicago, providing auditing, tax advising, consulting, and other professional services to large corporations. Arthur E. Andersen and Clarence DeLany founded Andersen, DeLany & Co. in 1913; after DeLany resigned, it became Arthur Andersen & Co. in 1918. The Milwaukee office, opened in 1915, was the firm's second office. Andersen led the firm until his death in 1947 and promoted centralized professional training and the motto “Think straight, talk straight.” Consulting expanded during the 1970s and 1980s. In 1989, Arthur Andersen and Andersen Consulting became separate units of Andersen Worldwide Société Coopérative. Arbitration granted Andersen Consulting independence in August 2000; it adopted the name Accenture on January 1, 2001, while Arthur Andersen rebranded as Andersen. By 2001, the firm was among the Big Five accounting firms. Its 2002 collapse followed the Enron and WorldCom scandals. Much of its U.S. business moved to other firms, while successor organizations included Accenture, Protiviti, and Andersen Tax.
