Ask Jeeves was founded in 1996 in Berkeley, California, by Garrett Gruener and David Warthen. Designed to accept questions in everyday natural language alongside traditional keyword searching, the service launched in beta in mid-April 1997 and fully on June 1, 1997. Its familiar Jeeves identity drew on P. G. Wodehouse's fictional valet, while Gary Chevsky designed and implemented the original software; Warthen, Chevsky, and Justin Grant led the interface development and launch. Ask Jeeves became a prominent late-1990s and early-2000s web search brand and traded on NASDAQ as ASKJ from July 1999 to July 2005. It acquired Teoma on September 18, 2001, and IAC acquired Ask Jeeves in July 2005 for $1.85 billion. The Jeeves name was dropped in February 2006 as Ask.com. After ending in-house web crawler development in 2010, Ask shifted toward question-and-answer services and outside search providers. Later content expanded into articles, topics, entertainment, and news aggregation. Ask.com shut down on May 1, 2026.
