Keep Louisville retail history close at hand with a Bacon's Sticky Post-it Note Pad. The name recalls Jeremiah Bacon's 1845 Market Street dry-goods store, the celebrated Fourth and Market flagship, and generations of shoppers who knew Bacon's from downtown to St. Matthews. A useful desk companion for reminders, lists, and everyday ideas, it gives a small nod to a Kentucky department-store name retired after Dillard's acquired Mercantile Stores in 1998.
Bacon's was a Louisville, Kentucky department store chain whose origins reached to 1845, when Jeremiah Bacon opened Bacon's Dry Goods on Market Street near Hancock Street. He moved the business into a building four times larger in 1876. In 1901, the company opened its flagship at Fourth and Market streets, a 115,000-square-foot building with entrances on both streets and a distinctive spiraling atrium. That flagship closed on September 6, 1972, to make way for the Kentucky International Convention Center. Bacon's sons sold the store in 1903 to New York City-based H.B. Claflin & Company, owner of Stewart Dry Goods; Ohio-based Mercantile Stores acquired it after Claflin's 1914 bankruptcy. The chain expanded to St. Matthews in 1953, Shively in 1956, Bashford Manor Mall in 1972, Owensboro in 1977, Louisville Galleria in 1982, and Mall St. Matthews in 1988. Mercantile was acquired by Dillard's in 1998, retiring the Bacon's name. Its Louisville Galleria downtown store closed in 2003.
