Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Ceramic Ornament
Honor a foundational railroad name with a ceramic ornament celebrating the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Its story began with a Maryland charter in 1827 and grew from the first 13-mile service to Ellicott's Mill into a western network reaching the Ohio River. The B&O's legacy includes early steam, the Washington Branch, Civil War-era importance, and a long transition into C&O and CSX history. A meaningful keepsake for railroad collectors and Baltimore families.
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, commonly known as the B&O, was chartered by Maryland in 1827, with construction beginning in 1828. Created to give Baltimore merchants a route toward the growing western territories, it began service in 1830 on a 13-mile line from Baltimore to Ellicott's Mill, Maryland. Horse-drawn cars gave way to steam locomotives in 1831, following the 1830 demonstration of the Tom Thumb. The railroad pushed west through Harpers Ferry, Martinsburg, Cumberland, and Wheeling, reaching the Ohio River near Moundsville in 1852. Its Washington Branch opened in 1835, and the B&O right-of-way later carried the experimental telegraph line between Washington and Baltimore in 1844. During the Civil War, the railroad suffered extensive damage while serving as a vital Union connection. Afterward, it expanded through consolidations and connections into Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. The Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad gained control in 1962; the B&O continued separate operations until its 1987 merger into the C&O, then a CSX subsidiary. Its lines are now controlled by CSX Transportation.
