The Bell System was a North American telecommunications network created in 1877 and initially led by the Bell Telephone Company. That year, the American Bell Telephone Company opened the first telephone exchange in New Haven, Connecticut, while local exchange companies soon spread to major U.S. cities. Alexander Graham Bell received a U.S. telephone patent on March 7, 1876. In 1899, American Telephone & Telegraph acquired American Bell's assets and became the system's parent, after American Bell had created AT&T for long-distance service between New York, Chicago, and beyond. The enterprise included local operating companies, AT&T Long Lines, Western Electric manufacturing, and Bell Labs research. The 1913 Kingsbury Commitment required AT&T to divest Western Union stock and permit interconnection. A 1956 consent decree further limited operations. A 1974 Justice Department antitrust suit ended in a 1982 settlement, and on January 1, 1984, local companies were separated into seven Regional Bell Operating Companies, the Baby Bells. Later mergers linked much of the legacy to AT&T and Verizon.
