Big Bear Stores was a regional supermarket chain founded by Wayne E. Brown in Columbus, Ohio, in November 1933. Its first store opened on West Lane Avenue on February 15, 1934, beside Ohio State University, helping mark the beginning of self-service supermarketing in the Midwest. The company expanded through Columbus and into Ohio cities including Lancaster, Marion, Newark, and Toledo, later serving Ohio and West Virginia. Big Bear introduced shopping carts in 1937, used cashier-operated motorized conveyor belts, and became the first supermarket in the nation to use an IBM 305 RAMAC mainframe computer in the 1950s. It purchased Harts Stores in 1954 and later developed the Big Bear Plus hyperstore format, beginning with stores in Wintersville and Bridgeport in 1988. After periods as a private and public company, Big Bear was acquired by Penn Traffic in April 1989 and became a Penn Traffic division in 1993. Penn Traffic's 2004 bankruptcy led to the closure of all remaining Big Bear Stores.
