Big Bear Stores was a regional American supermarket chain founded by Wayne E. Brown in Columbus, Ohio, in November 1933. Its first store opened on West Lane Avenue on February 15, 1934, beside Ohio State University, helping mark the beginning of self-service supermarketing in the Midwest. Expansion soon reached Lancaster, Marion, Newark, and Toledo, and the chain later served Ohio and West Virginia. Big Bear introduced shopping carts in 1937, helped found Topco Associates in 1948, and used Food Club, Valu Time, and Betty Brown private-label products. A 1954 Graceland Shopping Center prototype store introduced a layout that became an industry standard, while the same year brought the purchase of Harts Stores. Big Bear later developed Grocery Warehouse and Big Bear Plus formats. After a 1976 leveraged buyout and a 1983 return to public ownership, Penn Traffic acquired the company in April 1989. Big Bear became a Penn Traffic division in 1993; Penn Traffic's 2004 bankruptcy led to the closure of all remaining Big Bear stores.
