BlackBerry was a mobile-device and services brand developed by Research In Motion, founded in Waterloo, Ontario, and later renamed BlackBerry Limited. RIM announced the clamshell Inter@ctive Pager 900 on September 18, 1996, followed by the 950 in 1998. The BlackBerry 850 email pager, released January 19, 1999, was the first device to carry the BlackBerry name. Its wireless email, always-on connection, push notifications, and compact QWERTY keyboard made the brand especially prominent with corporate and government users in the United States and Canada. RIM introduced BlackBerry in Europe in September 2001 and released the GSM-based BlackBerry 5810 in 2002. The Pearl and BlackBerry Messenger helped expand the audience after 2006. BlackBerry 10 replaced BlackBerry OS in 2013, while the Android-based Priv arrived in 2015. In September 2016, BlackBerry Limited stopped designing its own devices and licensed the brand to partners. BlackBerry-branded hardware was last produced in 2020, while BlackBerry Limited transitioned to software and services.
