Cablevision Systems Corporation was an American cable television company serving communities around New York City. In the mid-1960s, Charles Dolan built Sterling Manhattan Cable in Manhattan and launched HBO, then sold both to Time Life Inc. He used the proceeds to create CableVision in suburban Long Island. Renamed Cablevision, the company expanded through construction and acquisitions across Long Island, New York City, New Jersey, Westchester County, and Connecticut. It later entered the Chicago, Boston, and Cleveland areas, reaching 2.9 million subscribers in 19 states by the mid-1990s. Late-1990s transactions consolidated operations around New York, Cleveland, and Boston; a TCI deal brought 10 New York-area systems to Cablevision. In 2000, it sold its remaining Boston, Cleveland, and Kalamazoo systems. Cablevision bought Bresnan Communications in 2010, rebranding it Optimum West in 2011, then sold it to Charter in 2013. Altice acquired Cablevision on June 21, 2016. Its former services continue as Optimum Communications.
