Columbia House began as the Columbia Record Club, a CBS/Columbia Records mail-order experiment founded in 1955 to sell music directly to consumers, including rural buyers. Rapid growth moved the operation from New York City to a distribution center in Terre Haute, Indiana, in 1956. The club expanded beyond records into stereo equipment, reel-to-reel tapes, 8-tracks and cassettes, while its licensing program added releases from outside labels. By the early 1970s, Columbia House became the umbrella name for its club operations, and membership exceeded 3 million by 1975. Sony acquired the CBS Records Group, including Columbia House, in 1988. In 1991, Sony and Time Warner formed a joint venture that combined Columbia House with Time Life music and video clubs. BMG Direct Marketing acquired Columbia House in 2005 and consolidated it under BMG Music Service. Najafi Companies acquired the business in 2008 as Direct Brands; music mail-order operations ended in 2009, while the name continued on DVD and Blu-ray clubs under license from Sony Music.
