Conrail, formally the Consolidated Rail Corporation, was the primary Class I freight railroad in the Northeastern United States from 1976 to 1999. Incorporated in Pennsylvania on October 25, 1974, it began operations on April 1, 1976, after federal reorganization of potentially profitable lines from bankrupt carriers. Its principal predecessors included Penn Central, Erie Lackawanna, Lehigh Valley, Reading, Central Railroad of New Jersey, and Lehigh and Hudson River. Penn Central itself had resulted from the 1968 merger of the Pennsylvania Railroad and New York Central Railroad, followed by a 1969 merger with the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. Following regulatory changes and management improvements, Conrail became profitable in the 1980s and was privatized in 1987. CSX and Norfolk Southern agreed in 1997 to acquire and divide most of the system. They took control in August 1998 and began operating their portions on June 1, 1999. Conrail continues through Shared Assets Areas in New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Detroit.
