Continental Airlines began as Varney Speed Lines in 1934, operating airmail and passenger service from El Paso through New Mexico to Pueblo, Colorado. Robert F. Six became general manager in 1936, and the carrier was renamed Continental Air Lines in 1937, when its headquarters moved to Denver. A 1955 merger with Pioneer Air Lines expanded its Texas and New Mexico presence, while the 1957 Chicago-Denver-Los Angeles route marked a wider network shift. Continental introduced Boeing 707 service in 1959, adopted its orange-and-gold Golden Tail identity in 1968, and added Boeing 747 and DC-10 operations in the 1970s. Texas International Airlines acquired control in 1981, and the companies merged in 1982; Continental moved to Houston that year. Later mergers brought PeopleExpress, Frontier, New York Air, and commuter carriers into Continental in 1987. In 2010, Continental and United announced a merger of equals. United retained the Continental operating certificate and globe livery, and integration was completed on March 3, 2012.
