From its 1836 roots to its Employee Owned era and 1995 Union Pacific acquisition, the CNW story gives young train fans a connection to a genuine American railroad legacy.
Chicago and North Western Railway, commonly called the North Western and using reporting mark CNW, was chartered on June 7, 1859, after purchasing assets of the bankrupt Chicago, St. Paul and Fond du Lac Railroad. Its system traced its origin to the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad, chartered in 1836 and operating from December 1848; the two merged on February 15, 1865. The railroad expanded through acquisitions including the Sioux City and Pacific, Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley, Milwaukee, Lake Shore and Western, Minneapolis and St. Louis, and Chicago Great Western. It leased the Omaha Road in 1957 and merged it in 1972. Employee ownership that year brought the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company name and the Employee Owned logo. After later restructurings, the original Chicago and North Western Railway name returned in 1994. Union Pacific purchased the company in April 1995 and integrated the CNW system into Union Pacific Railroad.
