Dahl's Foods Cuffed Beanie
The Dahl's Foods cuffed beanie brings a hometown grocery-store memory into cool-weather rotation. Dahl's began in Des Moines in 1931 and became part of daily life across central Iowa, from its landmark Beaverdale supermarket to the innovative Ingersoll Avenue location. For collectors of independent retail brands and locals who remember the stores before the 2015 transition, it is an easy tribute to an enduring Iowa name.
Dahl's Foods was a Des Moines, Iowa grocery store chain founded in 1931 by Wolverine Thilbert “W.T.” Dahl. Its first location was a 1,000-square-foot store on Des Moines' east side. In 1948, the company opened its first supermarket in the Beaverdale neighborhood; its bakery was described as the first supermarket bakery between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains. A 1952 store added a scratch bakery, pharmacy, and lunch counter. Until 1963, shoppers at that location could collect groceries at the “Dahl House,” a small parking-lot building supplied through an underground system. The Ingersoll Avenue store hosted the first U.S. grocery purchase using a debit card in 1981, and all stores had ATM POS terminals by 1983. Dahl's operated two Kansas City-area stores from 1979 to 1997. Facing growing competition, it began closing Iowa stores in 2014 and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy that November. Associated Wholesale Grocers acquired seven stores in January 2015. The Dahl's name disappeared in March 2015, when five stores became Price Chopper locations and two Des Moines stores became Cash Saver.

This cuffed beanie carries a lived-in street energy—soft, warm, and quietly bold. The low-profile embroidery sits on the cuff like a personal insignia: a small, slightly distressed logo with a touch of red that reads as both vintage and current. It slips on easily and stays put through commutes, late-night walks, and chilly market runs, adding a subtle graphic edge without shouting.
Wear it with a worn denim jacket, layered knit, or an oversized coat. It works for creatives who like to curate a look that’s casual but considered, for city cyclists who need dependable warmth, or for anyone who favors compact, tactile details. The hypoallergenic acrylic knit keeps things comfortable against the skin while the 12" cuff gives you styling flexibility—fold it high for warmth or roll it low for a slouchier silhouette. This is a small, everyday piece that quietly completes an outfit and ages into its own personality.
