Drexel Burnham Lambert Inc. was an American multinational investment bank whose lineage combined several Wall Street and Philadelphia financial names. I. W. “Tubby” Burnham founded Burnham and Company in New York City in 1935. The Drexel side traced to Drexel & Company, founded in Philadelphia by Francis Martin Drexel in 1838; in 1940, former Drexel partners and associates formed an investment bank using the Drexel and Company name. That business became Drexel Harriman Ripley after a 1965 merger with Harriman, Ripley and Company, then Drexel Firestone after Firestone Tire and Rubber Company acquired a 25 percent stake in the mid-1970s. Burnham merged with Drexel Firestone in 1973 to form Drexel Burnham and Company. A 1976 merger with William D. Witter, the American arm of Groupe Bruxelles Lambert, created Drexel Burnham Lambert. The firm became a major force in high-yield securities and 1980s corporate takeovers. After criminal and SEC cases, it filed for Chapter 11 protection in February 1990. Its remaining business emerged in 1992 as New Street Capital, which merged with Green Capital in 1994.
