E. F. Hutton & Co. was founded in San Francisco in 1904 by brothers Edward Francis Hutton and Franklyn Laws Hutton. An early California brokerage, the firm lost its offices in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake but expanded into a nationwide retail network for debt and equity securities. Wall Street trader Gerald M. Loeb joined in 1924 and later became chairman, while Edward F. Hutton led the firm until his death in 1962. Robert M. Fomon became chief executive in 1970. The company partnered with Western Union in 1976 and, by the early 1980s, was the principal component of the NYSE-listed E.F. Hutton Group Inc. Following financial and legal turmoil in the 1980s, Hutton agreed to merge with Shearson Lehman/American Express in December 1987; the merger took effect in 1988 as Shearson Lehman Hutton. The Hutton name was retired in 1990. Subsequent transactions placed remnants of the original business within Smith Barney, Citigroup, and later Morgan Stanley Wealth Management. The EF Hutton name was revived again in 2021 by EF Hutton Group.
