A K&B hoodie brings New Orleans history into a favorite everyday layer. Katz & Besthoff began in 1905 and became a familiar Gulf Coast drugstore chain, celebrated for its strong purple visual identity and deep hometown recognition. This tribute gives young wearers a link to stories of old neighborhood stores, family shopping trips, and a local business legacy that continued in civic memory after the chain was rebranded in 1997.
K&B, short for Katz & Besthoff, was a New Orleans drug store chain founded in 1905. Gustave Katz and Sydney J. Besthoff began the business at 732 Canal Street and expanded it through the twentieth century into a regional chain serving the United States Gulf Coast. The stores became closely associated with their distinctive K&B Purple, used on signs, cash registers, employee uniforms, and other store elements; the shade remains part of New Orleans local vocabulary. K&B sold a broad selection of private-label household goods, liquor, and signature ice creams, and operated an independent credit card program. Its later headquarters, K&B Plaza at Lee Circle in the Central Business District, was acquired in the mid-1970s. The older headquarters and warehouse at 900 Camp Street became the Contemporary Arts Center headquarters around the start of the 1980s. K&B sold its assets to Rite Aid in 1997, after which the stores were rebranded. K&B Plaza retained its familiar name, while the K&B family continued to occupy office space there.
